I am unable to download my mail using the native mail app after upgrading to IOS 18. I am getting the following error; “Network Error (POSIX 96)”
The mail configuration is on imap with SSL.

Hi, i see a similar problem, and solved changing the login greeting of the imap server to not contain non-ascii characters (in my case Dovecot server).
I don’t know why and after more than one month with problems, my email app now is working correctly.
So do I, i’ve experienced the network error (POSIX 54) when using the icloud email service since ios 18 updated. Hope u guys can fix it ASAP.
I am unable to download AOL Mail since 18.1 downloaded - am getting ‘NETWORK ERROR POSIX 50’ message!
This problem magically disappeared for me a couple days ago. Apple must have fixed something on the back end because I didn't do any OS changes or app upgrades or settings changes.
My email error is slightly different for my yahoo account…(POSIX50). It is frustrating, but it clears after a minute or two. But, it does pop up multiple times, daily.
I am finding that it is now intermittent, sometimes email downloads sometimes not, rather hit & miss, hope it is sorted out soon!!
Mine started downloading again after I switched off McAfee VPN.
Unfortunately nothing to report. They keep calling me off and on but looks like the engineering team is not prepared to accept it as a bug. Might help if more people raise cases with Apple.
If you had of mentioned it was a Outlook account the two suggestions I make, is 1. You reenter it using the Exchange option and if that doesn't work, then I usually suggest you download the Outlook app on the App Store.
After I installed OIS18 on iPhone I’ve had this problem with getting BT mail with the POSIX 96 network error message. However after deleting and reinstalling my email account, it’s working again. However the same email client had no issue whatsoever with my G Mail account !
As per my understanding POSIX 96 error is related to your server side error. Also based on your issue explanation, your mail server might be having session handling/holding issues. Check your IMAP/POP3 server error log or run your IMAP/POP3 server in debug mode to get more information.
I get POSIX 61 on BTinternet. This is a huge issue, we carry our phones with us and they are also authentication devices be it via MFA, text or MAIL - this is a big problem since updating to iOS 18.0.1 which I installed yesterday and have since had this issue.
Apple - is there a fix coming soon please?

This is very significant, and probably the most useful post I have seen respecting this problem! But, how did you fix it?!?
This means, ironically, apples own (discontinued) server software also won't work with iOS 18 because it runs dovecot.
