Apple Pay fails in the App Store and iTunes but works at 3rd Party Vendor Sites… Why?

I looked long and far for this answer and found the blogs did not have a fix for this, nor did the credit card and Apple customer service reps (at least no less than 10 reps over countless hours and days)

One astute Apple rep finally figured it out - the problem was not with the CC on file in Settings under the Wallet & Apple Pay area, but with the CC listed under my overall iCloud / Apple ID area at the very top of settings. Those two sections do not link behind the scenes, so when you’re CC and billing information updates in the Wallet, it does not cascade to the iCloud / Apple ID section.

This was especially difficult to resolve as the problem first shown itself on a linked family member’s phone. While representatives were looking in the wrong place, the astute Apple representative assessed, if you fix the priority account holder’s phone regarding the root payment method in the iCloud / Apple ID area, the update would fix the problem and cascade to the other member phones on the account. That is precisely what happened.

Per this employee, this is a know problem and Apple is working on a fix. Until then, if all other Apple recommendations don’t work for you, you may want to look here.

Lastly, a little side note learned in all of this is that the electronic wallet and Apple Pay are in actuality different elements. While the Apple Pay mechanism did not work on my family member’s phone due to an expired payment method on file, the electronic wallet still functioned fine because the payment method there was active and valid.

Just for clarity,

Apple Pay is not used in the iTunes & App Stores at all, as you have found out.

People have this confusion all the time.

The reality is, the cards added to the Wallet and the cards used with your Apple ID and iCloud (iTunes & App Stores) and entirely independent.

Updating one side will not affect the other side.

You can in some cases pull a card from the Wallet app and add it to your Apple ID, but at that point they are separate entries and are not linked or synced in any way.

Thank you for sharing your experience. It’s a complex situation and I deal with this on an almost daily basis. I wish you had posted about your challenges when it first happened because we could have resolved it fairly quickly.

In my experience, the vast majority of Apple users do not understand the relationship between their bank(s), Apple Pay, Apple Cash, Apple Card, Apple ID (now called Apple Account) and the various ways they interact and aren’t capable of interacting. This is compounded by the addition of banking regulation, and introduction of third parties such as Apple’s banking partners and complexities surrounding App Store, iTunes Store and the intricacies involved with payments.

Again, I’m really glad you’ve been able to resolve the issues you faced and are sharing them with the community. I hope you have a great rest of your week and a truly great weekend!

You’re 110% correct Phil0124. You didn’t even touch on the confusion with Apple Cash and Apple Card which will only increase as Apple introduces the services into new markets in the future.

Indeed. Don't get me started on the whole Apple Card, Apple Cash, and Apple Savings debacle.

Thank you Phil0124 and Jeff Donald. Your comments are appreciated and definitely clean up the picture for others! I better understand it now too because of your clarifying language. Best…

You're welcome. Hopefully it makes it clear to whoever reads this in the future.
