CarPlay not working with iPhone 16 Pro
I upgraded my iPhone 12 Pro to a 16 Pro, and the new phone will not connect to my 2018 Mazda CX-5 with CarPlay. When I plug it in, it charges but makes no sign of connecting.

I am so disappointed! My new iPhone 16 Pro does not work connect to my Carplay in my Toyota CHR. Had I known this, I would have upgraded to an iPhone 15 Pro instead. :(
I just got an Iphone16pro and had difficult getting my carplay to operate on my 2018 Camry. My previous Iphone 13 was functioning with no problem. I tried to tinker with the settings that was suggested above with no success and initially had the new phone connected to the car using the old cable with a usbc adaptor. It started to work the minute I changed the cable to a seamless USB to USBc cable. It was a connection/hardware issue. Hopefully this helps some of you.
took delivery 2 days ago and had the same problem.
simple fix really, unlike other iPhones the iPhone 16 will not work with a standard charging cable, it only charges the phone but cannot carry any date to the car.
Ordered a USB to USB-C data transfer cable £4.99 from Amazon and now work fine. Amazon advertise a charging cable and a charging data transfer cable make sure you order that one. They both look the same so if you have a old cable to charge you old phone it probably won’t work
I solved the problem. Buy a Nimble USB-A to USB-C cord. The Apple adapter does not work, because the old USB-A to lightning cords do not work. I suspect because they cannot support the same wattage. Since I changed the cord without the adapter, it has not disconnected. I upgraded from an iPhone 12 Pro Max to a 16 Pro Max.
No you’re incorrect. The adapter does work. MANY of us have used it and very successfully solved the problem. You should not equate your own failure by suggesting that unequivocally the Apple adapter doesn’t work.
Upgraded to 16 pro from 14 pro - CarPlay is now super laggy, have re-paired multiple times hoping it gets better but it never does - now every time I get in it takes minutes to connect and once it does everything is slow - connecting to a BMW i3
OK.... I have been checking this thread often and have tried just about every suggestion without any success. Three days ago I finally saw one that mentioned resetting your car stereo. I went a step further and reset my phone and my car stereo at the same time. For the last three days it has worked without any problems. Does not need to be plugged in, doesn't need to be repaired each time I get in the car...it just works like it use to!!!! Good luck!
Have you tried going into Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, and turned it on? That's fixed it for a lot a people. But you might have something in those settings specifically disallowing Music.
Apple was forced to change the connector type. You were using a power cable to transfer data. You never had an issue to begin with. If your goal was to make as many incorrect statements as possible, then you have achieved it.
What the **** are you talking about? I wasn’t having an issue to begin with??? Were you in my car? I’ve had my vehicle for 5 years, consistently used Appleplay and never had an issue until upgrading to Iphone 16. I’m not saying anything different than many others in terms of issues. I had to get a completely different type of cord than I’ve ever had to use with my car. And Apple doesn’t get “forced” to do anything. They do what they want. Money talks. Why are you even on this thread? You apparently don’t have these issues. Nothing better to do?
I wasn’t asked this. Since you want to troll responses and act like you have all the answers and know what is happening with everyone, I’ll reiterate what others are saying: some of us aren’t even getting the option to set it up. Not all cars have Apple play that connects with Bluetooth. I can only use it when my phone is plugged in.
For most people, this was not the issue. I asked this question before I figured it out that you need a cord that has data and charging not just charging. It does not have to be Apple, but it does have to have a data availability. The simple cheap one I was using Didn't work. I just had to change the cord. I tried the privacy settings and that didn't help.
Thank you @RibGuy7! I tried all the other trouble shooting on this thread and wasn’t confident this would work after all the other failures with my Ford Edge 2017 CarPlay. Just bought one from Best Buy that transfers data and it works perfectly! Thanks again!
I’m using a wired CarPlay connection and this solved the problem for me. A marketplace search for “iPhone 16 CarPlay cable” brings up the right products. I did also perform a reset on my receive (Pioneer AVH-1550 NEX) before getting the cable but that did not solve the problem. However, can’t be sure if the cable alone is the solution or if a reset is also required. I was unable to remove old CarPlay connections from my phone and other troubleshooting steps recommended in this thread on the phone did not help me.
I want to thank you for posting this. I bought the Belkin A to C as suggested, and eureka! My iPhone 16 now connects to Apple Car Play. My car is a 2022 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. It worked for my son’s car as well, which is a 2022 Toyota 4Runner. Thanks to this community and all of your help.
Beyond frustrated is an understatement. I loved my 11 pro max but it wouldn’t allow the iOS update as it was too old so that meant none of my work apps would update and nor other vital ones I use daily so began glitching. This is what happened to my son’s iPads they work but as a marketing ploy they force you into purchasing new upgrades. This will be my last apple purchase. I have an older toyota that doesn’t have apple carplay. I use and have always used usb and audio cords and jacks. Since this problem Ive spent more money on a whole bunch of new cords and jacks. Everything else comes through fine, Spotify, GPS, even Siri responds to me, but calls I can hear them but they can’t hear me so have to stuff around with loudspeaker options. This means pulling over each time a call comes which is annoying AF. I’ve tried ear buds but that’s even more of a stuff around in answering and selecting options in order to hear. I have been through 5 apple technicians, a supervisor and I went in store today and no one could help me. I was told by the staff member that it would be escalated this afternoon via phone to a “second escalation” this means that someone who is higher above the in-store techs, (those who encounter these issues and are the ones who write the codes for bug improvements and such to go with the new iOS updates) would be the ones to help me. I truly thought I’d get somewhere but unfortunately the staff member lied and I just had a basic tech call me who did all the diagnostics which everyone I’d already spoken to had done. The supervisor then got on the phone and after almost 2 hours with the tech and supervisor, I was told my car stereo was not compatible and in fact I was told all the older stereos are obsolete with this new tech and I needed CarPlay. Why wasn’t this advertised properly with apple when I purchased the phone? I had saved my money to buy this disaster and can’t get a refund because I got it from a major hifi retailer with my iPhone 11 trade in, instead of the Apple Store. They will send me on a hamster wheel saying it’s an Apple issue and Apple will direct me back to them. I’m so mad that this has happened. I feel like contacting the telecommunications ombudsman. It’s absolutely disgusting from Apple. Am I supposed to upgrade my car now just to safely use my phone? RIDICULOUS. I’m looking at CarPlay stereos now, isn’t that crazy? That will be another $500 with installation easy, and by the looks of the CarPlay issues you guys are having with the iPhone 16 I’m worried that it may not even work then. Shame on you Apple this is a whole lot of BS.
