iPhone 16 Pro not turning on

My wife’s iPhone 16 Pro is not turning on. Several times I have had to push the top volume, bottom volume and then hold the right power button until the Apple came on. And it took much longer than 10 seconds and instead of it coming on by itself, the Apple would show only after I held and released the power button. Did she get a lemon or are others having this problem? She gets a new phone every year so this is not an operator error.

This happened again to my wife's iPhone 16 Pro. She could never get it to start. I tried 3 or 4 times with the force restart and it again would not start. I then plugged it in as a last resort, did the force restart a few time and finally it started. The battery was at 100%. It took quite a long time holding the start button after the volume up and down buttons for it to finally start. I will do a force restart on my iPhone occasionally and it never takes that long. She has had almost every iPhone since the 3G, so this is definitely not operator error.


I am responding here in hopes that it gets pushed to the top of iPhone questions in hopes that others may either respond that they too are having this issue and what the resolution is.

I took my phone to the Apple Store and the best they could save was delete and reinstall the operating system. That is to say erase your phone completely and reinstall the operating system like you have a new phone. I haven’t gotten around to that because it’s such a labor-intensive pain in the butt. I did Apple help via chat. They had nothing. Has happened three times and on the third time I went into the Apple Store and essentially they had nothing.

This makes perfect sense! Apple does not have a charger included with the new phone. Users are using whatever

USB-C chargers they can find. The phone can get overcharged as a result.


Lowering the charging limit to 80% or 90% should avoid over charging issue. If the phone is turned off, it cannot enforce that limit and it will go to 100%.

All my past iPhones I have turned off at night. A while back I remember reading something saying it’s good for the phone. I did some research and there does seem like some merit to it being bad. Though this probably has nothing to do with it being bad for the phone. Also there are safety measures regarding charging, even over night. It cuts it off when full. Also, charging over night, again even if it was bad for the phone. Wouldn’t affect it not turning on.


Turning a phone on and off doesn’t necessarily strain the processor directly but rather the entire startup sequence. Here’s why it can impact the processor and other components:




1. Increased Power Demand: During startup, the processor and other parts like RAM, storage, and wireless radios work harder to initialize the system, load all necessary processes, and establish network connections. This initial surge in activity demands more power than regular standby or idle mode.


2. Thermal Stress: When the processor moves from a cool, powered-off state to a high-activity state, there’s a quick temperature change. This thermal cycling can, over time, contribute to wear on the delicate silicon components, as they expand and contract slightly with temperature changes.


3. Component Aging: Every power cycle contributes to the gradual aging of microchips and other components. Silicon-based processors can withstand many power cycles, but more frequent on-off cycles can, in theory, shorten their lifespan marginally.




That said, modern smartphones are designed to handle these power cycles with minimal wear, so the effect is small. Regular restarts are generally safe, but completely powering down every night might cause slightly more strain over many years compared to low-power modes or sleep modes.

This is the first time it happened to my phone and I got it around 3 weeks ago. I completely turned it off yesternight before charging it, but when I tried turning it on this morning it wouldn't turn on like its usual 10 seconds. I tried plugging it again and using different chargers and different outlet, but it still didn't turn on. I tried the method of pressing the volume up and down method very quickly and then holding the power button till the apple logo showed up. It took at least 30 seconds to turn it on instead of its usual 10 seconds. This has never happened with any of my phones before, let alone a new one I recently got. I updated my phone to 18.1. Hopefully Apple can get this fixed soon because I can't do any schoolwork without my phone.

I had the problem with my 16 and now a week or so later my husband had the same problem this morning. It took him several times trying the hard reset before turning on. Apple needs to fix this. I took mine in to the Apple store when it wouldn’t go on and the lady there that fixed it didn’t mention the hard reset or that this is evidently a problem but acted more like I just didn’t hold the power button long enough, although I had the phone for 2 weeks with no problem turning it on. I really do know how to turn the phone on.

Come on Apple, fix it!

Here is what Apple Store Genius Bar told us.


1- Do not turn the phone off at night

2- Do not leave it charging all night.

3- Either set optimizing charging to 80%, or turn off optimized charging but unplug it at night


1- Not turning it off at night obviously eliminates the problem since you do not have to turn it on.

2- Do not leave it charging at night keeps the phone from auto backing up

3- Has not been tried as a 100% charge is wanted. Since we get a new iPhone every year, battery health is not important to us over the long term


In my opinion, Apple has an issue since this was never an issue with prior models including the iPhone 15 Pro, and either does not have a fix. If what was told to us in the store is Apple's position, then they should put it in writing.

Well, I’ve got bad news for you. I had the same problem multiple times jump through 1 million hoops at the Apple Store had no end of problems getting my new phone started up again because they never did figure out what was wrong with the old phone but guess what? The new phone is exhibiting the same behaviour three weeks later I get up this morning phone will not turn on 50+ hard resets later it turns on. I’ve been an apple fan since the 1984 McIntosh commercial. And I am as depressed and saddened by the quality of the products created in China by the way by this company.
