Why won't my AirPods Pro 2 connect as hearing aids?

I just got the AirPods Pro 2 and want to use them as hearing aids before the upgrade. They will connect in Bluetooth, but will not add under hearing devices. When I try I get a pop up that shows battery life, but when I close that window it will not let them connect in hearing devices. What am I missing

That feature has not been released yet. It will be coming in a future update to iOS 18.

I have a couple of comments to add before the debut of the hearing aid function. First, I'm aware of several detriments to the use of APP2 as hearing aids, such as vanity and perception issues (the obvious presence of a hearing device which has a common use mostly unrelated to hearing health) and the fact that adjustments for outside use under windy conditions, for example, may be significantly difficult. But I think the benefits of cost and adjustability compared to those particular features for high priced hearing aids (such as the Miracle-ear units I purchased a couple of years ago) will be appealing, even game changing.

One observation that I've made which probably won't apply to most users, is that the microphone of APP2 doesn't distort when I play my musical instrument (a wind instrument that tends to be pretty loud for indoor listening). That occurs for my pair of Miracle-ear Energy 5 as well as all other hearing aids I've ever tried, and I tried several before deciding on Miracle-ear (which does provide a robust benefit for my significant hearing impairment). For me, that alone makes the use of APP2 as hearing aids an attractive prospect. There's a possibility that such a feature is available for the Miracle-ear product, but I wouldn't have thought about asking for it had I not been so impressed by recent improvements to the transparency feature already available for APP2.

You can monitor the site linked by @sberman. But the fact of the matter is that the iPhone/APP2 audio customizations are very intermittent (at best) at present. When they work, you'll probably get better performance by trying your own experimentation rather than by using any hearing test provided. You may have to connect to your APP2 multiple times to get the process of creating a custom audiogram to work, but you can do it on your iOS 18.0.1 iPhone at [Settings>Accessibility>Audio & Visual>Headphone Accommodations>Custom Audio Setup>Add Audiogram>Add Manually>Enter Results Manually]. I would check every band, and use 120 for every value above 1000 Hz (1kHz) just to see what the APP2 can do. You may need extreme settings because the APP2 wasn't designed primarily as a hearing aid. Also, you may use a volume setting of "all the way" for Transparency Mode settings. You should probably turn Personalized volume off and set Adaptive Audio to Less noise in the iPhone's APP2 Bluetooth settings. But the most important setting may be Transparency Mode in Settings>Accessibility>Audio & Visual>Headphone Accommodations. That can be a little tricky to get to until after you've created the audiogram. But when you get there, you set it as I described above. Good luck.
