AirPods Pro 2 Hearing Aids not available in Canada

In iOS 18.1 the long awaited Air Pods Pro 2 Hearing Test and Hearing Aids feature is (as of 18.1 release date) not available in Canada. When will it be available and is there any specific was as users we can make this happen?

I contacted Health Canada Bureau Of Licensing Services and if I interpret their response correctly, AirPods Pro 2 are approved (as of Dec 11/24) as class 2 medical devices. Availability is dependent on the provinces.

Has anyone had any luck?

Here is their response to my inquiry -

“On December 11th, 2024, Health Canada issued two Medical Device Licences to Apple Inc., authorizing the sale of their Hearing Aid Feature and Hearing Test Feature, which are compatible with Apple’s AirPods Pro 2. These types of hearing aids are Class II medical devices in Canada and require a Medical Device Licence to be sold in Canada.

Provinces and territories decide how licensed medical devices are accessed in their province or territory including, in the case of hearing aids, whether a prescription is required. Please contact your provincial health department for information regarding access to hearing aids and the applicable regulations.”

If Apple required that the user agree to some terms before using the hearing aid function would this eliminate the audiologists as a roadblock? This could include a phrase such as " user agrees that this device is not intended to replace proper health care such as annual physical examinations"

if Apple likes this idea they should feel free to send me a new iPhone 17 be they are also too expensive for seniors.

So frustrating and unacceptable. My wife got $4000 hearing aids 5 years and ago and rarely used them as they distorted sound so much. The rechargeable batteries died several months ago and the store where she bought them said the manufacturer no longer supported them and no repair could be done. The audiologists will fight us to the end as their only cash cow is seriously threatened by Apple. I have received nothing but boiler plate brush-offs from the Ontario Ministry of Health. Premier Ford’s office did not even reply.

So we arrived in Zurich, Switzerland on a holiday. Of course my hearing aid function works here, too and I’m sure it will continue to work as we travel to Italy in a few days. My partner mentioned to me how beautiful the song birds sounded outside the AirB&B we are staying and I said, I can’t hear the birds, other than the low frequency crows. I put in my AirPods and immediately I could hear the birds. It almost brought tears to my eyes how beautiful it sounded. My partner said, why are you being denied this in Canada? I can see the added joy this brings to your every day life.

Wow! It's amazing that your iPhone knew you were in that tiny portion of US territorial waters, and then enabled the HA functions. Definitely thanks to GPS technology that precisely determined your location.

No doubt you reported to Canada Customs at Swartz Bay and declared your high-tech acquisition while you were 'out of the country'😀😀.

Enjoy your new Apple hearing aids!
