User switching doesn't work properly in macOS Sonoma (Part 2) - Workaround

Starting a continuation thread because it was no longer possible to reply in this thread:

User switching doesn't work properly in m… - Apple Community

I use two different accounts on my M1 Max with Sonoma 14.6.1, and have been randomly plagued by the problems described in the thread above - User switching randomly stops working once in a while, and the only solution I had previously to switch to the other user was to log out the current user, which is of course irritating if you have a lot of context running.

Using the "Fast user switching" icon or the lock screen to switch user doesn't work.

However, I've now found a much better workaround for this bug than logging out. When user switching fails, click Apple Icon -> Restart -> Switch User.

This immediately takes you to the user selection screen, and suddenly selecting a different user actually works! Even better, from now the lock screen and fast user switching with touch id will also start working again. No need to lose any context by logging out or rebooting.

So this is obviously a bug, and the action above fixes it until next time it occurs.

With this workaround, the bug is barely even a nuisance.

This work around doesn't work in my case as user A already locked the machine and user B wants to login and can’t change the user. There is no access to settings menu as the machine is already in lock state. Now User B needs to either reboot and cause user A to loose unsaved work. Or User B needs to wait for User A to enter the password and then switch user as normally you would.

FWIW, User B CAN change the user if User A is logged in and locked the screen.

It is not readily apparent that this is possible, since when you look at the screen it seems that only User A is allowed to enter their password.

I agree that the user interface for this is misleading, though.

This was tested just now.

Lock screen from User A (only that user shows):

HOVER the mouse pointer near the User A icon, and all four users of this mac appear (and you may notice that a second user is also currently logged in, as the in the bottom row have the orange checkmark next to them):

Why is this not a workaround? It works fine for me and apparently others in this thread, without rebooting / losing context. It only happens occasionally so those few clicks are not a problem for me at least.

I can't reproduce the problem right now, but interesting that typing the username manually on the lock screen fixes it too, maybe I'll try it.

Thanks for screenshots. I can see all the Mac users and logged in statuses in my case. However when I click User B it will switched back to User A instantly and ask for User A’s password. User B is not allowed to enter password until User A logs in and then lock it again. My guess is this happens when OS needs a password from last logged in user to unlock and touch unlock is not allowed for some failed security check validations for which message is not visible to user. Thank you for your time.
