New time machine storage for late 2015 iMac 27 inch

I am looking to replace an old 4tb LaCie external HDD for Time Machine backups. My question relates to the storage drives and whether they will need their own independent power source or can they be powered through the USB connection? Most of the drives I come across seem to be powered through the USB but I want to be sure it will work with my older Mac before purchasing, as my current LaCie has a power cord. Sorry, not particularly tech-savvy as you can probably tell.

For reference-

iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015. 1TB SSD

Operating system-

Currently running BIG SUR
might upgrade to MONTEREY

PORTS

4 x USB3
(2 x Thunderbolt-2) redundant?

Laptop class 2.5” drives can easily be bus powered and most will work just fine with the old iMac. These can also be installed in external enclosures that are self powered with ac adapters.

Desktop class 3.5” drives need to be self powered in an enclosure with an ac adapter.

Self powered drives are less apt to disconnect from the Mac because of power issues than the USB bus powered drives.

Yes, what D.I.Johnson posted, about all I could add is that there are Thunderbolt/Thunderbolt 3 adapters out there… Apple makes one, others do too, it’s bi-directional, so your Thunderbolt 2 ports aren’t totally redundant/useless, you just need the adapter and you’re good to go.. i’d stick with OWC or any other knowledgeable reputable Mac ( only) dealer/vendor
