out of the blue I have 345.35GB of "system data" on my M1 mac mini.
unsure what this relates to but now Time Machine is telling me it can't back up as there no space on my 2TB external hard drive - its brand new and hasn't done a back up yet?

Go to disk utility and check the snapshots in the data library. You may have too many for some reason. Also read through this discussion for additional help.
