Preparing external drive for Time Machine

Bought UnionSine 1T external drive for M2 MacBook. Only allows formatting with exFAT or Mac OS Extended (Journalled), so chose the latter. Not recognized by TM (Sonoma). Then read that Time Machine will automatically format blank external drive in APFS (?), but now my disk isn't blank anymore, so that doesn't work. Any suggestions? Or a way to unformat the external drive? Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Barney. I found that out, and my external drive is now formatted as APFS. But TM still doesn't recognize it. Backup drive is named M2Bkp. I just get this:

"BACKUP DELAYED. The backup disk could not be found. Make sure the backup disk is connected or select a different backup disk."

Disk is connected, has the GUID partition, and appears on the desktop and in Disk Utility.

So thanks again, and hoping you've got something else up your sleeve.
