The software remote on iPhone (or iPad) is intended for additional use, not full replacement, as the differences may prevent some functionality.

Consider buying a physical true replacement remote. That remote will have to be paired (bluetooth) or linked (IR) to the box (depending on exact model).

The software remote requires that both devices connect to the same home network. iPhone on cellular but not Wi‑Fi will not work. The Apple TV box needs to be set up and activated and connected to the home network. You cannot use the software remote to help set up the network settings for the Apple TV box. Setup after reset requires the original remote (or a physical replacement [your own or temporarily borrowed]).

There is a remote for the ATV made by One-in-allwhich is bluetooth and performs all the functions, though it's all buttons and a ring like other remotes, with no trackpad area. I have to say I prefer it, particularly as it lights up. It's about half the price of the Apple one and is available on Amazon (at least in the UK).
