This is weird. What si the battery health of said iPhone? Check via settings >battery. If it is indeed an iphone 7 plus it could well be that the battery has been depleted

Thanks, it is an iPhone 7 and the battery is rated at 70% and has been so for some time. This may be the underlying cause.
