Apple Mail messages not opening

I'm using an IMAC with Monterey 12.7.6.

My emails show up as a list with the most recent message at the top.

Clicking on a message most often results in the message opening with only the header showing. There is no content in the body of the message.

Sometimes I am able to see the message content in Preview in which case if there is a hyperlink I can click on it and the message will open. However in that scenario if there is no hyperlink showing in Preview I am not able to open the message.

I quit Apple Mail and reopen it multiple times but that does not remedy the situation. I've rebooted but that also has not changed anything.

Then miraculously after having repeatedly tried the above I will click on a message and it will open. Sometimes I will attempt this for 10 minutes before I am successful. But this is extremely annoying and shouldn't be happening.

Any suggestions as to how this can be remedied?

Thanks

Remove your email account and set it up again

  1. On your computer, sign in to your email provider’s website. Make sure that all of your email is there or make sure that your email is saved somewhere other than your device.
  2. On your device, go to Settings > Mail, then tap Accounts.
  3. Tap the email account that you want to remove.
  4. Tap Delete Account.
  5. Add your account again.

If these steps don't work, contact your email service provider for more information.
