Oddly enough after multiple searches (spotlight, library, temp folder, iCloud, etc.), I used an app called Disk Drill. The free version just searches for lost files. I found the file after running the app. Interestingly, when I then went back into finder and clicked on the directory, the file was there. ( I did not have to recover the file, which requires purchase of the pro version of disk drill). Very strange. But I found my file, and am happy now.
