Why can I hear calls but my AirPods can’t transmit audio?

with my new AirPods connected, I pushed the side button on my iPhone12 and said “call Jim”. I could hear Jim say “hello”, Jim could not hear me.

Tried again, same process (increased my volume via the phone); same results.

3rd time: I disconnected my AirPodProII ears and called on the phone, which worked fine both normally and on speaker.
