What are the limitations of AirPods 4 on iOS 16.7.10?

I bought a pair of new airpod4 for my wife who uses an iPhone 8 with ios16.7.10

On her old airpods she could double tap the airpods to move to the next track of what she was listening to.

On these new airpods however she is unable to do that. Also the settings screen for the new airpods does not have any audio options like it used to.

On initially setting up the airpods I did get a message telling me to get the latest version of the operating system (which had already been done) or otherwise to accept functional limitations (which I had to accept)

So, is that what I am now getting? functional limitations?

My wife is very annoyed with me for getting these airpods which do not work for her.

Can you help me please?

Thank you

Nick

Thank you for replying WheelieNick.

Am i correct that IOS 16.7.10 is the latest version of IOS for the iPhone 8?

and if so ... then am i also correct thatI would not be able to tap the Airpods to change tracks and change volume?

Hence I should not have bought those Airpods and my wife will take her annoyance out on me in the traditional fashion ?

For Apple music at least, the AirPod 4 QUICKLY clicking the stem twice will advance to the next song weather or not the songs are in a playlist. To go BACK in a song list you QUICKLY click six times. This is not ideal but it should work. If the clicks are not quick enough it might pause the song instead which is one click. I use Overcast podcatcher which works in a similar way, two clicks advances about 30 seconds and three clicks to reverse about 30 seconds(not six clicks as for songs to go back to the previous song.) The seems to work with Apple podcast app.

Hope this Helps.
