studio display hard drive sleep

I have an Apple Studio Display with a MacBook Pro hooked up to it and also one external hard drive HDD plugged into a USB C port in the back of the Display.

When I put my MacBook Pro to sleep and unplug it from the Studio Display, the HDD fan constantly runs. Why is the Studio Display keeping the hard drive awake and running when no computer is hooked up to it?
