AirPods Max frequently disconnecting on iPhone

for the past few months almost daily my airpod maxes will have some problem connecting. usually they just disconnect and i have to lift them off my head to reconnect. sometimes the left ear will stop working and i have to do the same thing. earlier today i put them on and none of the buttons were working but my phone said they were connected and playing music even though nothing was coming out. i had to reset them and usually that fixes it but i had to go to settings and it said to forget the device. after they worked but i find it very odd and this isnt the first time ive been forced to forget and repair them. is this a common thing? is there any way to stop it?
