AirPods 4th Gen microphone issues

recently purchased airpods 4th before new years and it wasn’t until today when my boyfriend bought a pair that we realised that there’s an issue with the microphone. he can’t hear me and vice versa, we’ve reset our airpods and called on other platforms other than facetime to see if it was an issue. also turns phones on and off to see if it was a connection. i’ve played around with the settings to see if it would do any good but it’s like he’s very muffled and it keeps breaking up and it’s the same in his end for me.
