Numbers can't open any saved documents on MacOS Sonoma

I am experiencing a recurring issue with the Numbers application on my MacBook that has persisted for several months, rendering the software unusable. Whenever I attempt to open a Numbers document, I receive the following error message:

"[Document name] can't be opened right now. Numbers couldn't read the file. You can try restoring to a previous version."

This issue affects all Numbers documents, including new files I create. For example, if I create a blank document and save it, I am unable to reopen it immediately after.

Here are the troubleshooting steps I have taken so far:

Verified that I am running the latest version of Numbers.
Redownloaded and reinstalled the application multiple times.
Restarted my MacBook on several occasions.

Despite these efforts, the issue persists. I am currently running macOS Sonoma 14.7, but this problem has also occurred with previous macOS versions.

Has anyone encountered a similar issue or have any suggestions for resolving this? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your troubles! One possibility is that something happened to your documents and you need to try a previous version of them, not the application.

You may need to get a previous version from Time Machine (or whatever backup system you are using).

But it is puzzling that when you start a new document and save it, you can't open it immediately after.

Where are you saving your Numbers documents? I've had the best experience saving them on my local Mac drive or in iCloud Drive. Other locations can sometimes cause problems.

If you save a new document to your Mac or to iCloud Drive, close it, and still can't open that, then you may need to contact Apple Support.
