ITunes songs are not able to play

I've been purchasing songs from ITunes for close to 15 years and have close to 5,000 songs.

For some strange reason about 5% of my songs are indicating they are not able to be played.

The majority of the songs are ones starting with the letter 'S'. Any suggestions.

Further to the fiend's question about exclamation marks if you see those try my response in this thread: iTunes Original File Could Not Be Found - Apple Community.

Alternatively see Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows - Apple Community.

Do you have a backup of this data? Hard drives can and do fail. Sometimes all at once, but sometimes by being less reliably able to read certain areas of the disk. See Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy - Apple Community. The tool I recommend there can sometimes successfully copy files on a subsequent attempt that weren't readable first time around. If you attempt to copy the same folder from one drive to another using Explorer it always attempts to recopy everything, and falls over once it hits any file that it cannot read.

Do the songs that will not play have an exclamation mark to the left of the song's title? If so, that indicates that iTunes can no longer find the file for that song. (The exclamation mark may only appear once you try to play the song.)

That in turn, means that either the song's file is no longer where it was, or it has had its filename changed or the file has been deleted. It could even be that the path name has been changed.

So the question is, have you been doing any housework on your computer, using Windows Explorer (the file manager)?
