Apple chooses what emails count when counting unread email

After the last update I can no longer tell how many unread emails I have. It appears that Apple selects some emails for being counted, but many of my most important emails are left off the list. Some times I look at my phone and I have zero unread emails, but when I open the folder I have vital emails that aren't showing.

How do I get the actual total number unread emails to display?

iPhone 14 Pro Max, iOS 18

The number on my Home screen shows the total of all of the unread messages in my 5 email addresses.

Go to Settings/Notifications/Mail/Notifications/Customize Notifications and make sure that All Unread Messages is checked.
