I just switched over from an Android to iPhone. There are a lot of things I miss about my Android, one of them is the ability to read my text messages on Google Messages for Mac. Looking around I'm finding a lot of third party apps and iCloud which I don't use for Very Good Reasons. Is there anything like Google Messages for Mac that allows me to sync messages?

The feature you want is Text Message Forwarding:
Forward text messages from your iPhone to other devices - Apple Support
You can use it with, or without, "Messages in iCloud". I am currently using it without. Messages in iCloud would presumably provide more complete synchronization (e.g., of deletions, and of old messages on my iPhone that it received before I turned Text Message Forwarding on).

with mac continuity feature it will work for Text messages and iMessage's ,but coming to google messages as mentioned by you ,
you need to Go to https://messages.google.com/web on your MacBook in a browser. for additional settings and also you need to install google messages app in your phone too .
Ensure both the devices connected to the same internet when using this .
