Apple Numbers 'Open Recent' not showing files

For several years I could count on Apple Numbers to display a list of files that had been accessed recently, All of a sudden the Open Recent is empty. After finding the files in question, and opening them, they still don't appear under the Open Recent command.

It's worth checking to see if the setting in System Settings > Control Center > Recent documents, applications, and servers has been reset to zero. I find that doing a system update will frequently reset a number of settings. There is nothing you can do to prevent, just be aware that if something isn't working as before to check settings.
