Can't add folder to sidebar in Finder

I want to add an important folder to my sidebar for easier access when downloading files, but for some reason it won't let me do that. I remember at one point just dragging the folder in the list to the sidebar would let you drop it there, but it's not doing that anymore. How do I fix this?

In addition to dialabrain's suggestion: where in the sidebar are you dragging to? Supposedly it should go in to the "Favorites" section. Also, make sure that the Favorites is twirled open.

If it is closed, you may drag over Favorites, and it will highlight, but you won't see the contents until you click the ">" to twirl it open. Hover the mouse near the word "Favorites" until you see ">" and click it:
