How do I add gridlines to certain cells in a Numbers spreadsheet on my Mac?

Clicking on the Gridlines symbols in the sidebar in Numbers doesn't work. I somehow lost the horizontal and vertical gridlines in some cells on an old Numbers spreadsheet and would like to put them back. I'm using Sequoia 15.3.1 on an M4 Mac

It's such a simple question that there is very little info about it other than "click the gridlines in the sidebar." Except that doing that isn't working.

iMac 24″, macOS 15.3

Gridlines change whether the horizontal and vertical lines between cells are visible.

If you want to change the border of specific cells, you can do that by going to the Format tool in the top right > Cell > Border, then changing the style. You can specify which edges of the cells you want, border style (solid, dashed, or dotted), change the color, and change the width. Some border options only apply if you have mutliple cells selected.
