The iCloud Photos approach has the advantage that
- It is "set and forget" (as long as you do not run out of iCloud storage).
- You can check on what photos made it to iCloud using any Web browser, even if your phone has been run over by a truck, and you do not have a replacement phone yet.
- You can synchronize photos to other Apple devices (e.g., Macs, iPads) using the same Apple ID. There is even an iCloud for Windows that you can install on a Windows PC.
But manual import can work if you are methodical about doing it on a routine basis and not forgetting to back up the phone for a couple of years before catastrophe strikes.
Im only given 5GB of icould storage for photos, but my phone had 38GB of photo storage. I don't want to lose all the memories I've captured in these photos.
It sounds like you've chosen to put all of your eggs in one easily-damaged basket. If
- You forgot your passcode (so you had to reset and erase the phone to get back in), or
- Your phone fell into the street and was run over by a truck, or
- Your phone fell into water and stopped working, or
- A thief stole your phone, and your only copies of your photos, with it
your photos would be gone, whether you wanted to lose them or not.
