Unable to install macOS Sequoia update 15.4 on my MacBook Pro

Experiencing an issue with installing the macOS Sequoia 15.4 (24E248) software update. Chip: Apple M1 Pro.

The internet connection and power are stable, and I have rebooted the system multiple times, but the issue persists.

Tried updating both via the GUI and CLI:

CLI: Prompts for a password, then exits without any error, even when using the --verbose flag.

GUI: Asks for authentication twice, then returns an error without providing any additional details.

Good morning, DLZab. FWIW, I was able to find a client willing to test "fetching" full installer 15.32 with SUCCESS last night. Client was running Sonoma 14.7.5 on an M1 having no success upgrading to 15.4 resulting in crash diag: "panic(cpu 6 caller 0x0): t6000dart 0xfffffdf055505ae0 (dart-dispext1): Can't ignore lock validation @t6000dart.c:437

Debugger message: panic

Memory ID: 0x6, etc."

I have not had the need to use that command in Recovery, so no. I'm sure you're already aware that internet recovery is going to pull the latest version of the operating system anyway. Not an expert, but I'm assuming that command doesn't work via recovery because it has nowhere to put the installer.

Earlier today, tested the command via terminal in the os on an M1 MacbookPro running 15.3 with no issues.

I hear ya. Save yourself a little more time and just utilize a vanilla mac (if applicable) if all of your devices in lab/org are managed and restore your machines via Apple Configurator 2 (place machines in DFU mode of course). My org of course EOL'd Sonoma and are requiring 15.4 compliance. Good luck!

That softwareupdate command timed out for me. I did not try at safe mode.

Instead, at my M1 Air 2020, while being booted to external SSD disk, I did:

  1. Downloaded macOS 15.3.2 InstallAssistant.pkg from Apple CDN, download links at https://osxdaily.com/where-download-macos-installers/
  2. Double clicked InstallAssistant.pkg and install it to my external SSD disk Apps
  3. Formatted USB-C stick as HFS+ format
  4. Used command from Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support to write to USB stick
  5. Booted with long press of power to options menu
  6. Formatted internal disk as APFS
  7. Booted with long press of power with USB-C stick plugged in
  8. Selected Installer of macOS 15.3.2, installed it.

Pls read the post thoroughly...

15.4 is EXACTLY the reason causing all this craps...

If your Mac is working fine, don't do anything.

If you are already facing the same issue, DFU/USB install a 15.3.2

BTW, I did a DFU Restore, couldn't boot.

even if I have been able to update to 15.4.1 in the meantime,

I still have a question about the script/command:

softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 15.2

Even with version 15.4.1 this no longer works for me.

I have been getting the error for about 3-4 weeks:

Scanning for 15.4.1 installer

Install failed with error: Update not found

It doesn't matter whether it's 15.4, 15.4.1, 14.7.5, etc., it just doesn't work anymore.

At first I thought it was because I updated from 15.3 to 15.4, because it still worked with 15.3.2, but it seems to have been a coincidence, in any case it seems that Apple has a general problem here, why this command no longer works !??

Does anyone know more in the meantime ??

Hello everyone.

For the past few hours, I have received an error message on startup saying:

"You shut down your computer because of a problem (click ok to reopen apps or click cancel to continue startup)."

This issue happened because of a panic I received today when my computer unexpectedly restarted from sleep mode. Here is the full panic report:

My macbook air is over 5 1/3 years old and it is due for replacement in the next few months since it cannot support the latest version of macos. In the meantime, I am planning to use the computer for as long as I possibly can.

The issue that I have is possibly an issue with the firmware.

You haven't said how it should be.. enabled or disabled :)

Interesting observation and a valid question

Under normal and regular conditions it should be ON

In a special circumstance, a person may need to turn it Off Temporarily and Turn it ON again

Bottom Line Up Front: The process below didn't work and resulted in the same failure we've all been experiencing. It returned me to Sonoma 14.7.5 with an error report. Sharing so folks know this probably won't work, and might save some folks time.

Process

I downloaded the Sequoia 15.4 file from the App Store, loaded it to a "bootable" SSD, then restarted with "Startup Options" and booted from the bootable installer. (Instructions Here: Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support). Everything went as expected until the computer restarted, and returned the same "Kernel Panic" message I've gotten using every other attempt. I am still running Sonoma 14.7.5.

I'm not seeing a 15.5 Beta version of Sequoia available yet via the App Store. Latest version history is 15.4 beta 4. Once available, a 16GB or 32GB (I'd recommend) flash drive should do the trick. Just make sure it's formatted correctly, you have admin privileges, etc. resource Create a bootable installer for macOS - Apple Support

Just make sure to quit the installer post media creation and delete if you don't want the Beta version on your actual device.

You can also partition out larger drives (i.e external SSD's) as you go if you'd like to keep multiple operating systems in one place for testing, etc. Hope this helps!

A possible solution for those who have encountered a problem similar to mine.

I was unable to install a clean 15.4 system from a bootable USB stick. After installation, the computer asked to reinstall the system again.

I had to install macos Sonoma (14.7.5). From sonoma, I also could not install the sequoia version 15.4.

I also tried to download version 15.2 and install it - the result is also unsuccessful.

The solution that worked for me:

1. Boot into safe mode - this may not be necessary, but it is not at all difficult.

2. Download the full installation version 15.3.2:

sudo softwareupdate --fetch-full-installer --full-installer-version 15.3.2

3. Install it. I was able to install it by running the installer from Sonoma and via a bootable USB flash drive.

I will not install the 15.4 update for now. I have spent a lot of time, I do not want to anymore. I will wait until the company fixes the problems.

Hi! You may like to try these procedures:-

1. Check for macOS and Firmware Updates

  • Go to System Settings > General > Software Update
  • Make sure you're fully up to date — BridgeOS gets silently updated with macOS.

2. Reset SMC (System Management Controller)

On a T2 Mac, this means a full shutdown and restart:
  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Wait 30 seconds
  3. Power it back on normally

3. Reset NVRAM

  • Reboot and immediately hold Option + Command + P + R for about 20 seconds
  • This clears some hardware-level settings

4. Run Apple Diagnostics

  • Restart and hold D while booting to run a hardware check
  • Look out for reference codes

5. Review Crash Frequency

  • If this is a one-off, it might not be a major issue.
  • If it’s recurring, a deeper investigation or Apple Support might be necessary.

Please advise.
