Quicklook (preview) thumbnail is black in column view on macOS 15.4

FWIW, if you are viewing RAW files, there is a known issue with certain cameras that were supported before Sequoia 15.4.

It's certainly possible it will show the RAW thumbnails correctly in Sequoia 15.4.

This problem appears to have been introduced in the upgrade from Sequoia 15.3 to 15.4 — at least for Canon CR3 images.

Is there a link to which cameras (I assume image formats) now express this issue in 15.4, and which OS version will have the fix ?

Hi all in the thread.

I have a simple work around to the RAW images displaying as black when using (spacebar) quickview.

1. use spacebar to view in quickview - the image is black.
2. drag one of the view corners to resize the quickview window. Make it around half the size of the initial window size. The image appears.

In my personal situation, the default size of the quickview window for a 24 Megapixel image is quite large. Reducing the size of it by dragging it to a smaller window size (once it first displays as black) allows the quickview to redraw the image successfully. You might also notice that slowly dragging the quickview window size back up allows it to view larger, but it needs to be done slowly. I suspect there is either some kind of memory allocation or latency issue or an issue with the recursive way the window is updated in software that causes it to fail to redraw.

Not a solution, but a quick way to peek at the image using quickview.

Hi, I have same problem since Sequoia 15.4 update. But with space bar quick view is black pictures all the time. The NEF file comes from Nikon D750. We need sequoia update to fix the issue. thanx

It's unthinkable that such a MAJOR issue isn't yet solved.

For those in desperation, open in quicklook (space bar) and minimize the image on the trackpad, it will appear.

Apple fix this ASAP.

Me too! Well... I did not note this with 15.4, but yesterday I updated our two M1 Macs to 15.4.1. My wife and I are both photographers, and she was browsing in the Finder through a list of recently shot images (CR2 Canon RAW format) and all the thumbnails were black. I checked on my Mac and note exactly the same.

Hope this gets fixed soon, because this has a serious effect on the time we need to find the right file to start developing.

Exactly the same for me. All my RAW images are black screens and I cannot scroll through them following my recent update. This is a integral feature for my work. Do we know if this can be fixed or if apple are correcting this??

You're right about DNGs. I can only test dng files that I created ages ago (2008) from the RAW files of my Canon 350D. I have them archived, but just checked whether they showed the same issues (black thumbnail). They do not exhibit the same problem as the (much newer, though not that recent) CR2 files from my Canon 7D.

Just by using the down arrow on my keyboard, I can view them one by one.

I agree and really need this feature for my work! I know you can maybe handle an individual file to get a larger view, but when I have do many pictures to scroll through!!

Is there any word off apple how long this is going to take to fix?

Unbelievable bug and unbelievable, that it exists since April 3 - at least. Which means OVER A MONTH! I nearly got a hard attack when I downloaded the RAW/NEF-files from my Nikon today, without knowing of the bug, and they appeared BLACK - I thought the camera had a major defect! Fortunately in Lightroom I could see that the pictures are "there"... Apple: please fix this error, otherwise the use of the Mac is seriously hampered.
