Can't browse backups after update to Sequoia 15.3.2

I updated the OS this week, and this morning I tried to create a .txt file from an .rtfd, but inadvertently overwrote my original. No problem, I thought, get the backup from yesterday. But the Time Machine was unresponsive, would not let me browse. I tried backing up manually, and now I can only access the latest backup. Have I lost the edits I made (boldfaced areas in a very very long document)? How can I access the backups?
