Cannot Save or Drag Files to Server Folder

Forgive me if this is basic, I am new to Mac after a lifetime on Windows...

I am having two (maybe related) issues with saving files to a server location.

1 - If I have a file on the desktop that I want to move to the server folder, I cannot drag it on to the icon for the server folder. Instead, I have to open said folder and drag it into that. I then have to delete if off the desktop. Is there a way to have it drag and move to the server folder (as if it were a local folder)?

2 - I cannot save a file to a server location. Instead I have to save it to a local location and repeat the process for my first issue. How do I correct this?

Thanks!

If you hold down the command key it will reverse the standard copy/move behavior. Normally, dragging across a volume boundary will make a copy, but if you hold down command, it will move.

The two may be related, but I don't know why you are having this problem.
