Cannot receive phone calls or messages after transferring my old number to smarty
have tried all suggestions but know it’s something i have to amend in settings as my phone number not showing there though i have tried to add it

You'll need to contact Smarty for help. Apple has nothing to do with cellular services.
Then you need to contact Smarty directly. They might not have activated the SIM card yet.
What machine are you chatting with?
I have tried all day to “chat” to the machine & it keeps repeating the same rubbish & asking the same questions which i keep answering & to be honest am pulling my hair out. Why can’t you speak to or email a REAL person

I'm sorry and I'm sure it's frustrating, but Apple has nothing to do with Smarty. Why you can't speak with them, I couldn't possibly know. I'm going to guess they are a low cost MVNO, which usually means less services than primary carriers.
Yes I have removed sim & put back in but no joy
Poor customer service is one of the pitfalls of using a 'discount' carrier.
The smarty one & it’s completely useless unless you are asking something it knows about 🤬🤬🤬
