How to prevent Face ID from opening the Passwords app even though Face ID is off on everything.

I have an IPhone 12 Pro w/version 23 and the Password app is opening with Face ID, which I have turned off for everything. If I aim the phone away from my face so I can then hit cancel it opens the Password app anyway, without input of my 6 digit password. It was doing the same thing with IOS 18 & 18.5. I’m unable to find anything online to correct this. Any ideas or solutions would be much appreciated.

Other Apps are also shut down.

iPhone 12 Pro, iOS 18

Apple never released an iOS Version 23. The current version is iOS 26.0.1.

So I think you’re saying:

  • You aim the iPhone away from your face
  • You then (not previously) open the Passwords app
  • You are then told your Face ID is not recognized, and offered the choices of “Try Face ID again” or “Cancel”.
  • While still keeping your face out of range, you tap ‘Cancel”.
  • The Passwords app then opens.

I cannot duplicate this behavior. Of course, it takes special effort to tap “Cancel” with your face out of range.
