How to use the free Microsoft Word app on iPad without signing up for Microsoft 365?

Supposedly the MS WORD app is free, so I installed it on my iPad A16. However, when I open it I am presented with a screen that reads Get Started with Microsoft 365. It offers two options: Try 1 month free or Sign in for existing 365 users. I don't want 365, just the free WORD. I worry if I sign up for the free month Microsoft will start charging me for 365 when the free month is done. How do I get around this?

I am not familiar with that offer but it would no surprise me at all if it was 1 month free and then turns into a paid subscription. I would expect that of any major software retailer (Apple does it all the time).

See if you can find an alternative application. I don't have an iPad but I use LibreOffice on my Mac.

Also note that if you must use Word, you can use the online version available for free with a free Outlook account. You have to use a web browser.
