Preview irreparably damages PDFs

I'm trying to split a PDF into multiple files. To do so, I duplicate the file, keep the pages I want, and save. Sometimes I drag pages from the source PDF. Every couple of files I create, Preview crashes. It continues crashing every time I open the new file. Sometimes it breaks the source file if I delete pages. Seriously, Apple? How is this still an issue in 2025?
