40MB/s is one of those special values (I'm assuming this is what you meant). That is about the maximum speed of USB2. My guess is the USB-C cable, adapter, or dock is only rated for USB2. You can confirm the drive is being seen as a USB2 only device by checking the Apple System Profiler.....look under the USB section located on the left pane, the details will appear in the right pane. To access the System Profiler, Option-Click the Apple menu and select the first item.

You want to look at the "Link Speed" for that connected drive. If it shows 40-50MB/s (or 400 - 500Mb/s), then it is connecting as a USB2 device.

FYI, be very careful when writing drive speeds/transfer rates. The case of each character is very critical to understanding the speed. Notice how I wrote some values with an upper case "B" and others with a lower case "b"......that is intentional & very significant. MB/s is different than Mb/s. Same goes for the GB/s & Gb/s.

40MB/s is about equivalent to 400Mb/s and are two different ways of writing the value....notice the 10x difference in the numeric value (I'm not being 100% accurate with the equivalency of the numeric portion of those values since it would actually be an 8x difference....just easier to use 10 for in the head math & it is close enough for now).

FYI, a USB3+ rated cable should have some identification markings on the connector to let the user know what speeds are supported. If the cable has no markings, then it is probably just an Apple USB-C charging cable, or a very poor low quality cable.

BTW, what is a "sentdisk"? Do you mean Sandisk? Again, it is important to be accurate, since there are alot of junk products out their with odd names which try to trick users into thinking they may be a recognized name brand. It is also useful if you can post a link to the exact model on the manufacturer's website, or possibly the seller's website where it was purchased.
