How do I prevent Safari from not saving suggested passwords during password reset flow?

I've just tried to change my Facebook account password. Safari has autofilled my current password, then I've requested to suggest a new password, which was also autofilled into new password and new password confirmation fields. After I clicked the Change password button I've got browser notification, warning me, that if I leave the page, it won't save anything, therefore I've chosen to stay. And that caused the newly suggested password to be not saved into the Key Chain, while it's been changed in Facebook. As a result I have no clue, what my Facebook password is and I have to "reset forgotten password" now.

This issue annoyingly is plaguing Safari on Mac OS, iOS and iPadOS for many years. Experience within the app is even worse, as then the embedded browser window does not even suggest a new password. At least that used to be the case. And since I've got my FB account locked out several times in the past this way I'm only trying to change password via browser now.

The issue affects many other sites as well, where password changing is implemented on pop-up and/or redirects during the process.

I think there are few ways to solve it, but at least storing the suggested password temporarily in the Passwords app/KeyChain would allow to find the suggested password.

Wondering which MacOS version you have installed, and whether it is up-to-date with the newest cpmpatible version for your Mac model. You can check: Apple menu > Systam Settings > General > Software Updates

(NB: It is always wise to back up your Mac first, if you do choose to update or upgrade)

Keeping Mac updated, (ie: with the latest bug-fixes and security improvements) can often avoid issues.

Also: Particular websites may or may not have access to the passwords you use:

Apple support's article for MacOS 26: Change Privacy & Security settings on Mac - Apple Support

(If needed: you can change the MacOS version at the top of the linked article for accurate info.)

Eg: says:

" On your Mac, use Privacy & Security settings to manage the information your Mac makes available to others across the internet or on a network, and to protect your encrypted data."

Click: Apple menu > System Settings > Privacy & Security

Choose "Passkeys Access for Web Browsers"

If you want you can: "Allow third-party browsers to use your saved passkeys to sign you in to websites."

You may want to check the Safari settings you have enabled:

(NB: Depending on the MacOS version installed ...

your settings may look a little different than those illustrated below from MacOS Ventura)

Click Safari > Settings > Password > [sign in] > Password Options

Ensure you have "autofill" turned on

One secure way to change passwords is to start in Safari:

Click Safari > Settings > Passwords > [sign in} >

Search for a website, (or scroll down alphabeticlly): eg: Facebook

Click the (i) for info. button beside website name

Click the "Change password on Website" button

... continue on to change the password with Safari on hand to save the new password

Tip: copy the new password to the Mac clipboard for safe-keeping or to double-check.

Check the new password is saved in Safari, or paste from the clipboard if necessary.

(ie: A website may not have access to save passwords, or web-master may lack adequate skills to save)
