It is common for a new iPhone 17 Pro to show only a handful of recent messages while the rest remain stored in the cloud. Because Apple uses end-to-end encryption for your privacy, you cannot view these messages by logging into a website; they must be securely downloaded and decrypted directly onto your device. If you only see 10 messages, it usually means the initial sync is either waiting for the right conditions or has been paused to save battery and data.
To start the process, you need to verify that your settings are correctly configured. Navigate to your Settings app, tap your name at the top, and select iCloud. From there, look for Messages in iCloud and ensure the toggle for "Use on this iPhone" is turned on. Within that same menu, you should see a "Sync Now" button. Tapping this will manually prompt the phone to reach out to the cloud and begin the download process.
The speed of the download depends heavily on your environment and the amount of data attached to those 11,000 messages. To ensure a smooth transfer, connect your iPhone to a stable Wi-Fi network and plug it into a charger. Large syncs often pause if the phone is on cellular data or if the battery is low. If the progress bar seems stuck, leaving the phone locked and charging overnight is often the most effective way to let the indexing finish.
If the messages still don’t appear, check your available iPhone Storage under the General settings. If your device is nearly full, it may not have enough room to cache the message database. Additionally, ensure you are signed into the same Apple Account for both iCloud and iMessage. If everything looks correct but nothing is moving, try toggling the "Use on this iPhone" switch off and back on again to "kickstart" the connection to Apple's servers.
