Can't find Sort options in Numbers.app

using Numbers app need to alphabetic sort a CSV list.

I have a CSV text file. I opened .txt with numbers.

Numbers did not ask if I wanted rows or columns

Numbers chose 27 columns, 20+ columns not visible -not visible far off the page.

Rows as a default seems more logical.

Next I wanted to sort.

I selected row #1 of the entire 27 columns. Scrolling the 20+ not visible columns suggests all is selected.

Organize>> show sort options

There is a sort tab - but the "sort now" button is "greened out" (not available).

20 minutes later, my simple, simple 30-second sort job is still not done

I'm now flogging the internet for help.

There are no filters set, no other operations have been done.

I opened the .txt file, noted 27 columns created,

I looked for "sort".

No groups, no merges.

Is this old Excel user just too dumb for Apple apps?

A CSV file is an array of text. Each line in the CSV is a row of data in a spreadsheet, with commas separating the data/columns for that row. There is no interpretation of whether it should be the other way around. That's what it is.

You can select the table and use the menu item Table->Transpose Rows and Columns to swap your rows and columns after import.

There is no horizontal sorting. Sorting is vertical only.

That horizontal sorting is not possible, is very useful information. Wonder why nobody else, even Apple knows this.

And why the Numbers.app offers the option (arrow for each row) to “show sort options”……if there are no sort options.

Is it just abject programming sloppiness? I’m leery of spending effort learning apple apps. Apple was so elegant back in the Steve Jobs era, such a loss. But I never learned how to use a windows machine.

But thanks for that. I “transposed” and it sorted readily, and I finished my 30 second sorting task. 👍🏽👍🏽

Will you share a sample of the data so we can look at your situation more specifically.

Without that I can suggest that, since Numbers does allow you to transpose the table (swap the rows and columns). If you did perform a transpose action, you would be able to sort the rows (that were columns).

Number does what it does. You are conversing with fellow users.

If you want to provide feedback to Apple, you may use the Numbers menu item "Numbers > Provide Numbers Feedback"

TMSea, many if not most spreadsheets/tables are similar to databases where each row is a record in the database. Each column is for a specific piece of data like first name, last name, and adddress, or credit, debit, balance. Sorting across rows horizontally would totally destroy the spreadsheet/table. This may be why horizontal sorting is not an implemented feature.
