How to fix Apple Pay being disabled due to stale security information on Mac?
I wanted to share a possible solution for this issue if someone happens to experience it and other solutions have not helped. I tried the recommended solutions from this thread and for me, none unfortunately helped. That thread is a few years old now, so I wanted to share this solution in hopes it will help someone experiencing the same issues as myself. What did help solve my issue was the following:
- Create a new admin user account on your Mac.
- Log out of your existing account and sign in to the new user account. Complete the onboarding steps.
- Open System Settings -> Wallet & Apple Pay.
- From this point, I noticed that I did not see the same error about Apple Pay being disabled as on my main account.
- Add a new card to Apple Pay. You'll be prompted that there can only be one user at a time that can use Apple Pay.
- Click "Reset Apple Pay and Add Card."
- Complete the process of adding a new card. (Verification of the card is not required).
- Once complete, return to your main user account, delete the secondary account from your Mac, and set up Apple Pay again on your main account.
I suspect that resetting Apple Pay by trying to configure it for another user somehow makes the Mac check that there is in fact no issues preventing Apple Pay from working, which updates stale information regarding whether the Mac can use Apple Pay or not. Even though all my security settings were correct as per the above mentioned thread, my Mac was still stopping me from using Apple Pay, citing security as the main reason. Attempting to set up Apple Pay on an alternate user account I guess forced the Mac to update whatever stale information it had preventing the use of Apple Pay.
Hopefully this helps someone!
