Facetime bug - apple acount not eligible

getting this bug in FaceTime when trying to make calls:

Your Apple Account

”____gmailcom" is not eligible to use FaceTime. Use this phone number with an iPhone to place calls from this number, or add an email address to your account.

the @ and . is missing in this message, which is clearly a bug. other people had this with no fix suggested online.
