Share Internet via Ethernet - how to set IP?

I have a Mac Mini (running High Sierra) that is connected to to the internet via WiFi. I want to share the internet to another computer (running Linux) using the Ethernet cable. On the Mac Mini I enabled internet sharing over Ethernet. My question is how does the other computer get an IP address. I don't think the Mac is using DHCP for sharing internet. Do I statically set the IP on my linux computer? If so, what do I set it too?

Mac mini, macOS 10.13

Your mac will act as a DHCP server.

Go to System Preferences->Sharing and set it to share your connection from Wifi to computers connected to Ethernet.

Then in the Linux machine configure it to use DHCP.

That is good advice, Bob.

I agree that a direct connection will in general be preferable.

Only the OP can tell, but one possible case is having an old desktop computer without Wifi, which is located near the mac but far from the router. In that situation, Internet Sharing would be a good solution.
