Why are some events highlighted and some with dots?

Using the Month view, "all-day" events are highlighted, and timed events are displayed with a dot. The following excerpt is copied from Calendar help...

An all-day event. The bar’s color matches the color of the calendar with the event.

An event set for a specific time. The dot’s color matches the color of the calendar with the event.
