How to get a Genius Bar appointment

What's going on with Genius Bar? When I tried to make an appointment, I got an intense runaround repeatedly directing me to phone help or written support instead. No matter what problem I entered, that's what I got. In order to make a Genius Bar appointment, I had to go to the Apple Store and make one. Really?

  1. Genius Bar Reservation and Apple Support Options - Apple
  2. [Get Hardware Help] button
  3. Choose device
  4. choose {Repairs & physical damage]
  5. choose [Topic not listed]
  6. enter anything at all (I always enter "blah") > [Continue]
  7. choose [Bring in for repair]
  8. enter your location
  9. pick from Apple Stores in results on the left side of the map
  10. a popup appears with available reservation times over the map

I tested as far as right before clicking a time

That did work! Thank you! However, I still think they have made it much harder and more mysterious, not to say intensely annoying. Meanwhile, in the whole process of trying to make my late 2013 Mac desktop work faster, the nice Genius Bar folks wiped and reinstalled High Sierra after checking to make sure my backup was up to date., which it was. Then the Lacie backup drive broke, --TRULY!, right then! -- and I lost all my data. It's in some expensive data recovery place and Lacie says they have no responsibility. I wish I had just bought a new Mac and moved the data over.
