Importing 4k video from iphone

So I've switched to using my iPhone 11 Pro exclusively for video interviews for my podcast. While Catalina didn't really change how to import video into Photos from an iPhone, I want to not use Photos or the Cloud to get my videos on to my MBP so I can start editing faster. The video files will end up being stored onto an external SSD anyway. My issues is that it seems to be a big hassle to do this.


I tired multiple times to AirDrop from Photos on the iPhone and I kept getting a failed message almost immediately. I then attempted to transfer to an SD card via the SD reader from Apple. With iOS 13 you can now export to an SD card that way. Pictures transferred just fine, but the video ended up being in a format that QT couldn't recognize. While typing this I tried AirDrop again, and that seemed to work.


My videos are normally shot in 4k 60p so for one of my videos that came out to close to 45 GB. AirDrop is slow when you get to that kind of file size. I would hope that a direct connection via lightning would be faster, but I was even having issues using Photos on Catalina to import. It would just hang.


I'm just really looking for advice on the most reliable and efficient workflow. I've used the native camera app and the Moment app to shoot video. I'm having way too many issues with FilmicPro crashing that I consider it unreliable to shoot long form video. I mainly think it has to do with using the Filmic Remote app as it crashes while interacting with the app.

P.S. The iPhone 11 Pro is using iOS 13.1.2 and the MBP (13-inch, 2017) is on Catalina (10.15).

So here is what I’ve found out. All the new stuff basically breaks importing video into photos and you can’t easily import from Files.


one thing suggested by Blake. Calhoun who has an iPhone videographer YouTube channel is to not record in HEVC but regular H.264. I changed to that but importing to Photos was still a hit and miss. But the main reason he suggested that is so that 4K vids don’t get down converted. I figured out that I actually recorded at a non-4K resolution.


What I ended up doing is taking videos that were in the camera roll using the native or Moment app and then saving them to Files. The trick is that MacOS Catalina with the elimination of iTunes doesn’t see all of your folders on an iOS device. Since it does see FilmicPro’s folder I just moved them into there.


After that I just dragged and dropped the videos to wherever I wanted them to go. There really isn’t a progress bar that I can remember, you just have to wait for the copies file to not by greyed out. But it works every time.


Another thing I noticed is that Photos doesn’t remember what it’s already imported as far as photos from the iPhone. So I have about 700+ older pics that keep coming up. These are actually all in my library for a long time and my new iPhone 11 Pro must have downloaded them at some point. And some of those pics won’t re-import. Really strange.


Not too concerned about the pics as they are already saved in my library but it is annoying to have to scroll to the end to import the actual new pics.

sent to me from " Filmic Pro" We're currently working to update our tutorial materials to account for the new version of MacOS that dropped this week, but will definitely be doing so. As it seems you've discovered the way to manage your iPhone files is now handled through the Finder. Apple has removed iTunes File Sharing and implemented in the Finder the ability to view your iPhone's storage and copy files directly. However, there is a significant bug in the new OS that prevents you from transferring more than one file at a time. This has been frustrating to many of our users who have upgraded to Catalina, and we're hopeful that Apple will issue an update to resolve this bug soon.


In the meantime the only real solution to avoid this is to revert back to a prior version of the OS if that's an option for you! I'm sorry there isn't more that I can do, but you may wish to open a ticket with Apple about this so they know how frustrating it is, and do let me know if you have any other questions or issues!
