I have an iPhone 5S and am trying to pair it with my apple watch series 3. The phone says the phone software version is up to date at version 12.4.3 (which is not the latest IOS) and the watch keeps telling me to update IOS. Are they not compatible?

A new Apple Watch comes with watchOS 6 which requires an iPhone 6s, SE, 7, 8, X, XS, XR, 11 or 11 Pro upgraded to iOS 13.
If you purchased the Series 3 after Nov 15th, then you have until January 8th to return it for a full refund. If you purchased before Nov 15th, you have 14 days from date of purchase to return the Apple Watch

Do you know what version of watchOS is on the Watch? Is it new?
If the Watch has been updated to watchOS 6, you will only be able to pair it with an iPhone 6S or later.
