Suddenly, a sidebar I do not want

Perhaps it was an update,or perhaps I tapped something I shouldn’t have tapped, but now when I open an email, I get a 1/3 page sidebar on the right side, showing the email itself with tiny letters and very small pictures. I am technically incompetent, and cannot figure out how to remove this so I can get a full screen back. Can anyone help? Thanks so much!

You have multitasking turned on. In iOS 13, Go to Settings>Home Screen and Dock>Multitasking>Allow Multiple Apps>Off.

Or a Settings>General>Multitasking and Dock>Allow Multiple Apps>Off in earlier versions of iOS.
