Can't change Apple ID on phone

I changed the email address of my appleid. But now I can't sign out and back in with my new email address on my phone.

When I try to sign out on my phone, I get a prompt to 'Enter the Apple ID password for "old_email" to turn off Find My iPhone', but obviously there is now no longer an account with that email address associated with it and that fails.

Funnily enough I was able to set my iTunes and App Store account on the phone with the correct address.

I would be grateful if someone could help, I am tired of being prompted 20 times a day to enter my Apple ID.

Many thanks

simon

If you updated your Apple ID email address* before signing out of iCloud, and your device repeatedly asks for the password to your previous Apple ID, you can temporarily change your Apple ID to sign in.

Thankfully I still have the old email account active.

So I had to go through the process of:

  1. changing my Apple ID to the old email
  2. Signing out of my phone
  3. Changing my Apple ID back to the current email
  4. Signing back in with the current email

This is close to the approach as suggested by fyip below.

If I no longer had access to my email, I would have been stuck.
