i am passing on my old phone to my child and need to unlock it so he can use his sim card

There are 2 issues here. The first is releasing the phone for reuse. See this Apple support article—>What to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If the phone is locked to your carrier, and it is different from his carrier, you need to follow these instructions—>How to unlock your iPhone for use with a different carrier - Apple Support
Then you just need to insert his SIM.
