I lost my airpods in my case, but the last known location was around my house when I used the find my app. I know for a fact the case had 3% charge left. If i wait it out and wait for the case to die, could I then be able to ping my airpods and play the sound?

Unfortunately if your AirPods’ battery is depleted then there is nothing you can do to track them.

No the airpods had full charge. The case was almost dead
